History of Glenmore

 

The Glenmore land plots are located on the beautiful island of Sanday, which is the largest of the north isles of Orkney and is famous for it's dazzling white sandy beaches like those found in the Caribbean. The island is both a haven for wildlife and contains a number of important archaeological sites.

The Holms of Spurness is a favourite breeding site for the grey seal and seal pups are born on the areas secluded beaches in November. The Northwaa area in the north of the island has been declared a site of special scientific interest, due to the rich diversity of plant and bird life which inhabit this wetland area.

Archeologically, the island has a number of important sites, including the Chambered tomb at Quoyness, dating back over 4,000 years and the Tofts Ness funerary complex. The complex is considered one of the most important prehistoric sites in Britain, comprising of some 500 prehistoric burial mounds, representing thousands of years of mans development.
